France's Hollande calls "more than ever" for cease fire in Gaza

English.news.cn   2014-08-03 20:52:14

PARIS, Aug.3 (Xinhua) -- French President Francois Hollande on Sunday said a truce in Gaza was needed "more than ever" after Israeli week-long military offensive left more than 1,400 victims.

"All our efforts must be boosted to impose, now more than ever the cease-fire in Gaza and end the suffering of the civilian population," Hollande said during a ceremony to commemorate WWI anniversary when Germany declared war on France exactly a century ago.

Israel's air strike targeted a UN-run school in Rafah, in southern Gaza Strip on Sunday, killing least 10 people and wounded 30 others.

With shelling renewed in Hamas-controlled enclave, delegation of members from Palestinian militant groups arrived in Cairo for indirect talks with Egyptian and U.S. officials to discuss an eventual truce while Israel said it would not send envoy to the meeting.
