DAMASCUS, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian government forces have been deadlocked in battles with the so-called Islamic State (IS) militant group in the country's northern province of Hasaka in recent days, pro-government media and opposition activists said Sunday.
The state news agency SANA said the army forces on Sunday stormed "terrorists' gatherings" in Hasaka, inflicting heavy losses upon them, in addition to destroying their weaponry.
It said the army units recaptured the center of teenagers' penitentiary, the Martyrs Cemetery and al-Ahrash area at the southern rim of Hasaka.
It added that the army killed and injured scores of "terrorists " who were attempting to attack a military post at the southern entrance of Hasaka, most of them non-Syrians.
However, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the IS fighters actually succeeded on Sunday to storm the Mailabiyeh Regiment base in the southern rim of Hasaka, following intense battles with the Syrian troops.
The Observatory said the government forces have intensively shelled the IS positions in Hasaka overnight amid reports of losses on both sides.
The battles between the Syrian troops and the IS have raged recently on many fronts across the country, during which the IS attempted to storm key military bases in northern and central Syria.
A day earlier, the Syrian forces dislodged the IS fighters from the al-Shaer natural gas field in the central province of Homs after the IS stormed it last week.
However, the IS succeeded at the same day to storm a key military base in the northern province of Raqqa. The 13th Division base was deemed the last stronghold for the government troops in Raqqa, which has fallen to the IS fighters since last year.
The IS, previously known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, has recently self-proclaimed an Islamic Caliphate in areas striding Syria and Iraq. It has succeeded in capturing almost of the oil fields in the oil-rich province of Deir al-Zour in eastern Syria on the borders with Iraq.
