JERUSALEM, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Seven Israeli soldiers have been killed in clashes with Gaza militants since Sunday night, raising the death toll of Israeli soldiers to 25, the Israeli army said on Monday evening.
Four soldiers were killed within Israel in a clash with Palestinian militants tunneled in from northern Gaza, an Israeli army spokesperson said, adding that their families have been notified.
Earlier on Sunday, 13 Israeli soldiers were killed in battles with militants in the Gaza Strip, the highest toll on the Israeli side since its Operation Protective Edge in Gaza began two weeks ago. Overall, 25 Israeli soldiers and two Israeli civilians have been killed since the campaign started on July 8, according to the Israeli army.
Some 30 Israeli soldiers have been injured for the past 24 hours, three severely, the army said.
In Gaza Palestinian health officials said on Monday that Israel 's strike there has left 548 Palestinians dead, including 120 children, and around 3,300 others injured. Two thirds of the victims were civilians.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Cairo on Monday afternoon for talks with Egyptian officials on a possible ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is also expected to meet with Egyptian officials in Cairo and later visit Jerusalem in an attempt to draft a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
