Afghan clash leaves 14 Taliban, 1 soldier killed

KHOST, Afghanistan, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Gun battle between Taliban militants and Afghan forces claimed 15 lives including 14 insurgents and one Afghan soldier in Khost province on Friday, a local official said Saturday.

The eastern province is bordering Pakistan with Khost city as its capital, 150 km off Kabul.

"A group of Taliban militants raided a checkpoint of Afghan army in Soorkuli area of Musa Khil district on Friday evening and the soldiers returned fire which lasted for a while and resultantly 14 Taliban rebels were killed," spokesman for provincial government Mohammad Mubariz Zadran told Xinhua.

The clash also claimed the life of an Afghan soldier and injured six others, said the official.

Taliban militants who have speed up activities over the past couple of months, are yet to make comment.
