NEW DELHI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama Friday formally invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Washington this September, highly placed sources said.

The invitation was delivered by visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns who met Modi here, they said.

Modi, who is already scheduled to visit New York to attend the U.N. General Assembly meeting in September, has accepted the invitation, the sources said.

"The Indian Prime Minister has accepted the invitation and told Burns that he looks forward to a result-oriented visit with concrete outcome," the sources said.

After the U.N. General Assembly meeting, Modi would head to Washington to meet Obama, said the sources.

Burns on Thursday met Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in the capital.
