India's ruling BJP elects Modi close aide as new president

NEW DELHI, July 9 (Xinhua) -- India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday elected Amit Shah, former Gujarat home minister and close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,as its new president, said BJ outgoing president Rajnath Singh.

The crowning of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's closest confidant as the new BJP chief "capped a phenomenal and rapid rise for the party's key election strategist" who crafted an unprecedented victory in Uttar Pradesh for BJP in the last general election, said Press Trust of India.

Shah, 50, is also known for his toughness in keeping law and order during his tenure as home minister in Gujarat, where Modi was chief minister for 13 years.
