Militants attack governor office, police headquarters in S. Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Anti-government militants launched massive offensives against police headquarters and the provincial governor office in Kandahar city the capital of Kandahar province, 450 km south of Kabul on Wednesday.

 "A group of militants first conducted a suicide car bomb next to the Kandahar police headquarters and minutes later some militants begun opening fire on the governor office," spokesman for provincial government Dawa Khan Minapal told Xinhua.

Gun battle between the security forces and the attackers is going on, Minapal said, adding that the militants have occupied some buildings near the provincial governor office and police headquarters.

So far, a car bomb suicide bomber exploded in the city, he confirmed while predicting more blasts as gun battles continued.
