UNITED NATIONS, July 8 (Xinhua) -- UN Women has appointed British actress Emma Watson as its new Goodwill Ambassador, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters here Tuesday.
"Best known for her role in the 'Harry Potter' film series, the young actress will dedicate her new efforts towards the empowerment of young women and will serve as an advocate for UN Women's HeForShe campaign in promoting gender equality," Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here.
HeForShe is a place for men to speak up and tell the world why equality for every woman and girl is worth fighting for. Men, read up, then speak out to help end.
The executive director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, said that the engagement of young people is critical for the advancement of gender equality in the 21st century. She added that Watson's intellect and passion will enable UN Women's messages to reach the hearts and minds of young people globally.
"Ms. Watson called the opportunity truly humbling, adding that she hopes to bring more of her personal knowledge, experience and awareness to her new role," Dujarric said.
UN Women is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.
