DAMASCUS, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Three children were killed and their parents were wounded when mortar shells slammed a neighborhood in the country's eastern province of Deir al-Zour, the official SANA news agency reported Sunday.
The mortars slammed a house at the al-Ruwad neighborhood, killing the three children and injuring their parents while they were preparing for breakfast in the holy month of Ramadan, said SANA, adding that the mother is in critical condition.
Large swathes of the oil-rich Deir al-Zour on the borders with Iraq have spiraled out of the government control over the past year.
Mortar attacks have become a daily occurrence across the country. A local media report said that a total of 426 mortar shell struck the capital Damascus in June.
