WASHINGTON, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The United States announced Friday to impose sanctions on seven "separatists" for their role in threatening the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
As a result of the action, any assets of the individuals designated that are within U.S. jurisdiction must be frozen, said a statement issued by the Treasury Department, adding that transactions by U.S. persons or within the United States involving the individuals are generally prohibited.
The individuals blacklisted Friday are mostly separatist leaders or self-described officials in eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, according to the statement.
"These individuals have all contributed to attempts to illegally undermine the legitimate government in Kyiv, notably by falsely proclaiming leadership positions and fomenting violent unrest," said David Cohen, Under Treasury Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence.
The United States will continue to take action to hold accountable those persons engaged in efforts to destabilize Crimea and eastern Ukraine, Cohen said.
