France expresses concern over violence upsurge in Iraq

English.news.cn   2014-06-13 03:51:15

PARIS, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The situation in Iraq was "serious" and would affect the regional security, a French foreign spokesman said on Thursday, urging Iraqi different factions to bridge gap to preserve the country's unity.

"It is important in the current situation that all Iraqi political forces act in favor of harmony and unity. It's up to Iraqi authorities to fight against terrorism," spokesman Romain Nadal said.

France also urged quick moves "to prevent violence against minorities" and "to ensure the protection of local populations, notably Christian minorities," Nadal added.

Conflict-torn Iraq plunged again into a new wave of violence after militants of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seized the country's second biggest city Mosul on Tuesday after days of clashes with Iraqi forces.

On Wednesday, the ISIL took control of the Turkish consulate in the northern city and abducted the diplomatic staff.

"France condemns the abduction of dozens of Turkish nationals in the Turkish consulate in Mosul. We call for their immediate release. Everything must be implemented without delay to release them," the Quai d'Orsay spokesman said.
