U.S., Japan to meet over extended deterrence

English.news.cn   2014-06-10 05:24:38

WASHINGTON, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The United States will discuss its extended deterrence commitment to Japan in meetings starting on Tuesday, the State Department said on Monday.

The two allies will have a so-called Extended Deterrence Dialogue in Albuquerque in southwestern U.S. state of New Mexico, a three-day event that the department said "reinforces the credibility of the U.S. defense commitment to Japan."

Washington and Tokyo regularly discuss deterrence as part of their broad security cooperation agenda and have had the extended deterrence dialogue since 2010, the agency said in a statement.

It said as part of the latest talks, the participants will visit nuclear-related sites at Sandia National Laboratories to " deepen their understanding of the strategic weapons systems that support U.S. extended deterrence guarantees, and how the United States ensures its strategic forces remain safe, secure and effective."
