PARIS, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday held talks with the newly-elect Ukrainian head of state Petro Poroshenko, on the sidelines of D-day landings commemoration in Normandy, north France, local medias reported.
Citing source close to the presidency office, the Elysee, the news channel BFMTV said Putin spoke with Poroshenko for 15 minutes about possible measures to de-escalate violence in Ukraine.
French president Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel joined the first informal meeting between Moscow and Kiev top officials in the Chateau de Benouville, in Normandy, where world leaders had lunch together.
According to the report, Putin and Poroshenko ended the meeting with a handshake in a likely sign of Russia's recognition of Poroshenko's legitimacy the day before he is sworn in.
