PARIS, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday held talks with the newly-elect Ukrainian head of state Petro Poroshenko, on the sidelines of D-day landings commemoration in Normandy, north France, local medias reported.
Citing source close to the presidency office, the Elysee, the news channel BFMTV said Putin spoke with Poroshenko for 15 minutes about possible measures to de-escalate violence in Ukraine.
French president Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel joined the first informal meeting between Moscow and Kiev top officials in the Chateau de Benouville, in Normandy, where world leaders had lunch together.
According to the report, Putin and Poroshenko ended the meeting with a handshake in a likely sign of Russia's recognition of Poroshenko's legitimacy the day before he is sworn in.
G7 summit concludes with consensus to support Ukraine, enhance economic cooperation
BRUSSELS, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) on Thursday expressed support to new leadership in Ukraine and planned to enhance cooperation in the field of energy, trade and climate change.
Speaking at a press conference after the summit, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said that G7 stands united behind Ukraine and its new leadership, politically and economically. Full story
Merkel promises German support for Ukraine's development
BERLIN, June 5 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday met with Ukrainian president-elect Petro Poroshenko and pledged support for Ukraine's future development.
Speaking at a joint press conference with visiting Poroshenko, Merkel praised the "fair and free election" held at the end of May in Ukraine, saying it was a "pan-Ukrainian poll" which was also accepted by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe according to its standards. Ukraine tightens control on border with Russia
KIEV, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine has closed several crossing checkpoints on the border with Russia in its eastern Lugansk region, the State Border Service said Thursday.
