Surgeon offers lifeline to man with giant scrotum

English.news.cn   2014-06-03 09:47:57

SYDNEY, June 3 (Xinhua) -- A plastic surgeon has offered a lifeline to a man living with a disease that has caused his scrotum to grow to the size of a watermelon.

Queensland man Tyrone Bowd suffers from scrotal lymphedema and last week the 24-year-old's desperate plight was made known through local media.

It was revealed he faced a death sentence unless he could raise more than 100,000 AU dollars for lifesaving surgery in the U.S..

After reading of Bowd's condition, reconstructive plastic surgeon Dr Ramin Shayan, who has a PhD in lymphoedema, said he would be able to complete the surgery in a public hospital for free.

"The life threatening part of this would be the infections he could get," Shayan told Quest newspapers.

"Why should this poor guy try and struggle with his life, 100, 000 dollars is the cost of a house in some parts of the country."

He has operated on two patients with similar conditions.
