NABLUS, the West Bank, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army shot dead late Monday night a Palestinian man at a military roadblock near the northern West Bank city of Nablus, Palestinian medical and security sources said.
According to Israeli media, that Israeli army shot dead a " Palestinian gunman" after he opened fire on and wounded an Israeli soldier at the Za'tara military checkpoint near Nablus.
The medical sources said that the Israeli army closed off the area around the checkpoint and banned Palestinian ambulances from entering, adding that the identity of the killed Palestinian remains unknown.
Witnesses in the area said that the body of the slain Palestinian was still left on the ground, while Israeli soldiers were preventing ambulances or residents from approaching the area.
Israeli electronic media reported that the man slightly wounded an Israeli soldier, who was sent to a hospital in northern Israel for treatment.
The media reports quoted Israeli army sources as saying that after the Palestinian gunman shot the soldier, other soldiers returned fire and killed him.
Earlier on Monday, Israeli government officials said that they would hold the new unity government and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas responsible for any escalation of violence.
There was no immediate official Palestinian comment on the incident.
