WASHINGTON, May 30 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday announced that the White House press secretary Jay Carney is leaving his post.

Obama made the announcement on Carney's resignation at the White House press briefing room. Carney is to be replaced by his deputy Josh Earnest.

Obama called Carney one of his closest friends and a great press secretary, saying "he has a good temperament, and he's got a good heart. I will continue to rely on him as a friend and adviser. "

Carney, a former Washington bureau chief for Time magazine, had served as White House press secretary since 2011.

According to the President, Carney plans to take the summer off before getting a new job.

Earnest, who is described by Obama as "honest and full of integrity" and "a straight shooter," has been an aide to Obama since the early days of his 2008 presidential campaign.
