Suspended jail term for Thai "red shirts" leader upheld

English.news.cn   2014-05-22 14:02:49

BANGKOK, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Appeals Court on Thursday upheld a six-month suspended jail term and a fine for Jatuporn Prompan, chairman of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), or "red shirts," for defamation.

In September 2012, the Criminal Court sentenced Jatuporn to six months in prison, suspended for two years, and a fine of 50,000 baht (about 1,546 U.S. dollars) for defaming former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in 2010.

Abhisit, also leader of the Democrat Party, filed the lawsuit in March 2010, saying Jatuporn had accused him of planning a crackdown on red-shirt protesters in public speeches.

The Appeals Court upheld the Criminal Court's judgment and sentence, saying the accusation was groundless and intended to incite hatred against Abhisit.
