Backgrounder: Major military aircraft crash accidents since 2011

BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- A Lao military aircraft carrying about 20 people, including the Lao deputy prime minister and minister of defense, minister of public security, and mayor of Vientiane, crashed in Laos' northeastern province of Xieng Khouang Saturday morning and left at least five dead.

The following are major military aircraft crashes around the world since 2011:


-- On Feb. 11, a U.S.-built C-130 Hercules transport crashed in the mountainous Oum El Bouaghi region in northeastern Algeria, killing 77 people, including 73 soldiers.


-- On Nov. 9, An Indonesian military MI-17 helicopter crashed in a remote jungle area in North Kalimantan province, killing at least 13 people on board and seriously injuring six others.

- On Feb. 11, a Guinean helicopter transporting a Guinean military delegation crashed near Monrovia, killing all six delegation members aboard, including the country's chief of general staff General Kelefa Diallo, as well as five crew members.


--- On Dec. 25, a Kazakh An-72 military transport plane crashed in southern Kazakhstan, killing all 27 people on board.

-- On Dec. 6, A South African C-47 Dakota military aircraft crashed in a mountainous area in the eastern province of Kwa-Zulu Natal while on en route to Mthatha in the southern province of the Eastern Cape; all 11 people on board died.

-- On Nov. 21, a Yemeni Antonov military cargo plane crashed in its capital city of Sana'a, and all 10 crew members aboard were killed.

-- On Nov.10, a Turkish Sikorsky military police helicopter crashed in the country's southeastern province of Siirt, with four crew members and 13 taskforce soldiers on board dying.

-- On Oct.7, a Sudanese Antonov military plane crashed in the province of Khartoum, leaving 17 soldiers dead.

-- On July 20, A Brunei Bell 202 military helicopter crashed on a return trip after a training mission, killing 12 and injuring two others.


-- On Sept. 14, an Angolan air force plane crashed in the central city of Huambo, killing 26 people aboard, including four lieutenant generals.

-- On Sept. 2, a Chilean air force CASA-C212 transport plane crashed into the Pacific near the Juan Fernandez islands, some 700 kilometers west of the South American coastline. All 21 people aboard were killed.

-- On July 26, a Moroccan C-130 Hercules military aircraft crashed in southern Morocco, killing all 80 people aboard.
