Iran vows not to stop "peaceful" nuclear program

English.news.cn   2014-05-11 16:34:21

TEHRAN, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Iran's nuclear program is "peaceful" and the Islamic republic will not stop it, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said here on Sunday.

Rouhani said that Iran's nuclear activities are "within the directives of the Nonproliferation Treaty or NPT and international regulations."

"Iran's path in the course of achieving nuclear technology has been right and it will never be stopped," he said ahead of a fresh round of nuclear talks between Iran and major world powers scheduled for May 13 in the Austrian capital of Vienna.

"Iran has not followed illegal actions and has not tried gaining nuclear arms," and Iran's enemies have always "lied" about its nuclear program, he said.

Threats and sanctions against Iran will not hinder the country' s "peaceful" nuclear program, he said, adding that "The only thing that we can do (to clarify about Iran's nuclear program) is transparency."

World powers have to recognize Iran's nuclear rights and respect Iran's nuclear achievements, he stressed.

Iran and the P5+1 group, namely Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany, clinched an interim deal last November, in which Iran agreed to cap its nuclear program in exchange for easing some financial sanctions against it.

Iran's uranium enrichment capacity and Arak heavy water reactor comprise a major part of the negotiations for a comprehensive nuclear deal between Iran and the six world powers. Iran has proposed redesign of the core of the reactor and reduction of plutonium output to one fifth of the plant's capacity.
