OTTAWA, May 2 (Xinhua) -- The opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) introduced a motion Friday to force the ruling Conservative government to protect Canadians from warrantless snooping into their phone and Internet records.
The NDP accused the Conservatives of failing to protect Canadians' personal information and making Canadians pay over one million Canadian dollars (about 890,000 U.S dollars) every year for the invasion of privacy.
The opposition emphasized the government should follow the advice of the Privacy Commissioner and make public the number of warrantless disclosures made by telecommunications companies at the request of federal departments and agencies; and immediately close the loophole that has allowed the indiscriminate disclosure of personal information of law-abiding Canadians without a warrant.
"People have a right to know just how often Conservatives are allowing Canadians' private communications to be intercepted, and why," said the opposition.
