WASHINGTON, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Two inmates were killed and more than 100 others were injured in a suspected gas explosion at a jail in the U.S. state of Florida late Wednesday, local authorities confirmed Thursday.
The blast, at about 11 p.m. at the Escambia County Jail, also caused the jail building to partially collapse and local authorities have blocked off roads leading to the jail, according to Escambia County's official website.
About 600 inmates were in the building at the time, and the injured, which included inmates and correction officers, were taken to hospitals. The uninjured were taken to jails in neighboring counties, it said.
Florida was drenched by rains and severely flooded Wednesday as part of a large storm system making its way across the south and U.S., but local officials said they did not yet know whether the flooding and explosion were related.
Investigation of the cause of the incident is ongoing.
