KIEV, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland on Monday pledged to continue providing support to Ukraine.
"We will continue to support Ukraine to preserve the unitary status of the state," Jagland told a press conference.
The Council of Europe will work within its mandate to provide assistance to Ukraine to implement constitutional reform, hold a fair presidential election and prepare necessary legislation for parliamentary elections, said Jagland.
The Council of Europe, which promotes cooperation in Europe in legal standards, human rights, democracy and the rule of law, also stands ready to provide assistance to Ukraine in the context of strengthening the rule of law in the East European state, Jagland said.
The Ukrainian government is considering amending the country's constitution to grant more power to local governments in a bid to ease tensions in mainly Russian-speaking eastern regions.
The country's lawmakers are due to approve constitutional changes before the presidential election on May 25.
