TIRANA, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Germany will provide extra financing to Albania to help protect Shkodra Lake, the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula.
Albanian Transport and Infrastructure Minister Edmond Haxhinasto and German ambassador in Tirana Helmut Hoffman Tuesday signed an agreement on extra funds for an environmental protection project, estimated at 20 million euros (27.6 million U.S. dollars), aiming to improve the water supply and sewer system throughout the Shkodra area.
"This important project will upgrade water supply service and also ensure protection of Shkodra lake from pollution," Haxhinasto said.
The German government, through its development bank KfW, is one of the main sponsors of water supply and sewer system projects in Albania.
Shkodra Lake, also called Scutari or Skadar, lies on the border of Albania and Montenegro. It is one of the largest bird reserves in Europe, having 270 bird species.
