S.Korean prosecutors raid office of sunken ferry operator

SEOUL, April 23 (Xinhua) -- South Korean prosecutors on Wednesday raided the office of the sunken ferry operator, the owner's house and related affiliates, local media reported.

Inchon prosecutors' office has been investigating alleged corruption of the ship owner, Yoo Byung-eon, and his family members.

Cheonghaejin Marine, the operator of the ferry Seowl which capsized near Jindo island off the country's southwest coast on April 16, has been under suspicion that it had illegally modified the ferry to expand passenger cabins and overloaded cargoo.

Investigators raided some 10 places, including companies and religious communities linked to Yoo, to search and seize financial documents and related data.

Yoo, 73, is a former chairman of the Semo Group, which went bankrupt in 1997, according to local daily Jungang Ilbo.

Assets owned by Yoo were estimated at 560 billion won (540 million U.S. dollars). Prosecutors have been tracing bank accounts and foreign real estates owned by Yoo and his family members, including a 3.5 million dollar mansion in New York.

SEOUL, April 21 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Park Geun- hye likened what captain and some crew members of the sunken ferry did as murder on Monday, vowing to force those responsible to shoulder legal responsibilities regardless of ranks.

"What captain and some crew members did was like an act of murder that cannot be acceptable and permissible from a common-sense standpoint,"Park said during a meeting with senior secretaries. Full story

Four more crew members of sunken S. Korean ferry arrested

JINDO, South Korea, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Four more crew members of the South Korean ferry that capsized and sank off the country's southwestern coast last Wednesday were arrested on Monday over negligence of duty and violation of rescue acts charges.

Prosecutors have arrested four crew members, including two first mates, one second mate and one chief engineer, of the ferry Sewol, which was upturned and sank off Jindo Island, a southwestern tip of South Korea. Full story
