7.0-magnitude quake hits S. Mexico

MEXICO CITY, April 18 (Xinhua) -- A 7.0-magnitude earthquake shook southern Mexico at 9:27 a.m. local time (1427 GMT) Friday, Mexican National Seismologic Service said. 

At a depth of 10 km, the epicenter was located in the sea waters 41 south of Petatlan in the southern state of Guerrero, some 300 kilometers south of the capital Mexico City, where the quake was strongly felt for about one minute.

Power outage and loss of phone service were reported in some parts of Mexico City, and buildings in the downtown area were evacuated.

In a twitter post, Guerrero Governor Aguirre Rivero urged the public to keep calm and take necessary protective measures.

So far there have been no reports of human casualties or huge property loss.

The U.S. Geological Survey said in its latest update that the quake was measured at 7.2 on the Richter scale.
