Croatia tries to become regional energy hub: economy minister

ZAGREB, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Croatian Economy Minister Ivan Vrdoljak said on Thursday that his country is making efforts to become a regional energy hub by developing oil and gas exploration terminal projects.

He made the remarks in a South Eastern Europe regional energy forum held in Zagreb which brought together about 200 participants from the region, including energy and economic affairs ministers and representatives of energy companies, local media reported.

He described the country's energy strategies as becoming a regional energy hub by exploring oil and gas in the Adriatic and building liquefied natural gas project on its northern Adriatic island of Krk, as well as the construction of a Adriatic-Ionian gas pipeline.

Vrdoljak suggested an Adriatic gas pipeline be constructed to connect Croatia, Hungary and Ukraine.

"We will always support this smart and strategic project," he said.

In early April, Croatia announced a tender for oil and gas exploration in the Adriatic Sea. More than 30 companies including several international energy companies showed interest, according to local media.
