LONDON, April 17 (Xinhua) -- British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Thursday offered his condolences on the ferry tragedy in South Korean occurred on Wednesday, according to the Foreign &Commonwealth Office of Britain.
The passenger ship "Sewol" carrying 475 people capsized in waters off South Korea's southwest coast Wednesday, leaving at least nine people dead and 287 others still missing.
"I send my deepest condolences to the government and people of South Korea following the Sewol ferry disaster," said William Hague.
"My thoughts are with all the bereaved families and their relatives and friends, and those people still waiting for news of their loved ones," he added.
He said the British government is ready to offer any assistance they can to the South Korean government.
Latest reports said a sudden turn triggered vehicles and shipping containers to be tossed off their place before making the ship off balance. The reason of the abrupt turn was unknown.
