400,000 households in Philippine capital city affected by water interruption

English.news.cn   2014-04-16 15:20:28

MANILA, April 16 (Xinhua) -- An estimated 400,000 households in a large part of Philippine capital city and neighboring Cavite province will experience water supply interruption from Wednesday to Saturday, a rarely seen long period of water cut-off for years, for emergency repair of a local flood control project.

The duration of water interruptions ranges from three-day to two-day and one-day period at 800 barangays (villages) in Cavite and Metro Manila. Residents were advised to get to know the affected period of respective communities from water company's website.

To lessen the impact on water consumption, Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Philippine Volunteer Fire Brigades Inc. deployed 175 water tankers to augment water supply in the affected areas. Residents in Metro manila have also bought bottles of drinking water or stored water at home since the notice of water interruption was announced on Monday.

Local water company said earlier that the Department of Public Works and Highways would install an interceptor box culvert, which will traverse the Maynilad water pipe along the corner of Juan Luna and Hermosa streets, to address the perennial flooding problem in Manila.

The water company explained it would need 72 hours to drain, realign and energize its affected water pipe because it is a seven- foot-tall primary line.
