MANAGUA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted 12 kilometers south of Nandaime, Nicaragua, Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Nandaime, in Granada province on the Pacific coast, is located 61 km from the national capital Managua.

The epicenter, with a depth of 114.7 km, was initially determined to be at 11.647 degrees north latitude and 86.063 degrees west longitude.

A Xinhua reporter in the national capital Managua said the quake was felt very strongly. It was also felt in Costa Rica.

Thousands of fearful residents living in communities along the country's Pacific coast poured into the streets.

There were no reports of victims or material damage as yet.

Another quake of 6.2 magnitude struck Thursday but was centered around 18 kilometers southeast of the city of Larreynaga, in the northwestern part of the country and close the Pacific coast. It had a depth of ten km. Thursday's quake damaged hundreds of homes, left some 33 people with slight injuries, and indirectly led to the death of someone who died from a heart attack.

Earlier on Friday, Nicaragua's government announced to extend a red alert to its entire Pacific coast due to powerful aftershocks.
