PYONGYANG, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Wednesday held the first session of its newly elected parliament and formed a new government.

The first session of the 13th Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) re-elected top leader Kim Jong Un the first chairman of the National Defense Commission, the official KCNA news agency reported.

It re-elected Pak Pong Ju the premier of the DPRK Cabinet, and appointed members of the Cabinet proposed by Pak.

The session re-elected Kim Yong Nam the president of the Presidium of the SPA and Choe Thae Bok chairman of the SPA, appointed the director of the Supreme Public Prosecutors Office and elected the president of the Supreme Court, said the report.

The session also adopted a decision on approving the results of the implementation of the DPRK's state budget for 2013 and an ordinance of the SPA on the DPRK's state budget for 2014, it added.

The 13th SPA elected 687 deputies across the country last month, who will serve a five-year term.

The SPA, the highest legislative body of the DPRK, has the power to adopt, amend or supplement enactments to the constitution, determine state policies and budgets, and adjust the country's leadership.
