Japan, Australia reach FTA accord

English.news.cn   2014-04-07 19:21:10

TOKYO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Japan and Australia on Monday agreed on a bilateral free trade deal, said visiting Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Australia, after the deal, becomes the first major farm exporter to conclude a free trade agreement with Japan, which is very cautious to open its agricultural market.

Abbott announced the agreement at the outset of his summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who said the FTA deal bears " historic significance" for closer Japan-Australian relationships.

Japan has decided to lower its tariffs on beef exported by Australia by up to half, while Australia has basically agreed to drop its 5-percent tariff on Japanese automobiles, according to Japan's Kyodo News.

The bilateral FTA talks had been stalled due to divergences on Japan's tariffs on beef.

The two sides aim to reach an FTA accord this summer and make it enter into force by the end of 2015.

Meanwhile, Japan and Australia has planned to hold two-plus-two meeting in June in Tokyo and the two sides also agreed on joint development and research on submarine technology, said Kyodo.
