Shallow quake strikes off Bengkulu, Indonesia

JAKARTA, April 3 (Xinhua) -- An undersea quake measuring 5.7 Richter scale jolted Bengkulu province in Sumatra island on Thursday, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said here.

The quake rocked at 16:30 p.m. Jakarta time with epicenter at 181 km southwest Bengkulu Selatan and with the depth at 10 km under sea bed, an official of the agency told Xinhua by phone.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 3 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) at Bengkulu city, the capital of the province and Kepahyang district, the official said.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on vulnerable quake-hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire".
