ASTANA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev named his chief of staff Karim Massimov as the new prime minister on Wednesday after Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov resigned.
The announcement was made through a Twitter message posted by the presidential press office.
Massimov served as the Kazakh prime minister from January 2007 to September 2012 before Akhmetov.
"In accordance with the constitution, the head of state has accepted my resignation," Akhmetov told a government meeting. "I want to thank President Nursultan Nazarbayev on behalf of myself and my government for his trust."
Akhmetov said his government will keep doing its duty until a new government is formed. He did not give a reason for his resignation.
Before making his decision, President Nazarbayev had consulted with party leaders of the Majilis, or lower house of the parliament.
