Indonesia issues warning on impacts of Chilean tsunami in its 19 provinces

JAKARTA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian authorities on Wednesday issued a warning Wednesday on the impact of tsunami wave generated by 8.2 magnitude earthquake in Chile.

The warning, issued by Indonesia's Tsunami Early Warning Center (InaTEWS) task force after studying and analyzing the tsunami wave movement, said that waves of tsunami generated by the earthquake would affect at least 19 provinces across the country.

The task force under the coordination of Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) estimated that tsunami waves from the Chilean earthquake would arrive in Indonesian waters on Thursday between 05.11 a.m. to 19.44 p.m. Indonesian Western Region (WIB) time.

The agency said that the tsunami waves with heights between 0 to 0.5 meter would arrive in 115 coastal areas located in 19 provinces across the country, including Papua, North Maluku, Maluku, East Java, Yogyakarta, Central Java, Banten, West Java, Lampung, West and East Nusa Tenggara, Bali and several provinces in Sulawesi, Kalimantan, among others.

"The BMKG has reported the warning to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). As the warning was issued in alert status, regional administrators affected by the tsunami were ordered to avert people from coastal and river bank areas," BNPB Spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told Xinhua by phone.

He added that the tsunami wave generated by the earthquake as high as 1.92 meters now have swept coastal areas in Chile, Peru, Equador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

He said that BNPB Chairman Syamsul Maarif had issued an order to immediately extend the warnings to regional BNPB offices and regional administrators and called on people to stay alert.

He added that no evacuation plan had been made in such a situation.

According to reports reaching here, the strong quake has killed at least five people in Chile.
