NICOSIA, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Cypriot defence minister Tasos Mitsopoulos died on Saturday, just over 24 hours after suffering a massive brain haemorrhage. He was 48.
Doctors at a hospital in Nicosia said the defense minister passed away at 1.30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT).
Mitsopoulos was earlier pronounced in a non-reversible in a medial bulletin issued by his doctors.
"His health condition has gradually deteriorated overnight and is not considered to be reversible", the bulletin said.
Mitsopoulos was found unconscious in his ministry office by his secretary on Friday morning, between etiquette meetings he had with foreign ambassadors.
He had moved to the defense ministry from the Ministry of Communications in a limited government reshuffle on March 14.
Doctors at the hospital where he underwent an emergency brain operation said the hemorrhage had been caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm -- a bulge in a blood vessel filled with blood.
Cyprus' President Nicos Anastasiades visited his former close associate only two hours before his death. He was clearly shaken while exiting the hospital and said that only prayers could help.
Anastasiades called his ministers at an extraordinary session of the Council of Ministers early in the evening.
