NICOSIA, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Cypriot Defense Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos was in a non-reversible condition on Saturday after suffering a massive brain haemorrhage on Friday, according to a medical bulletin issued by his doctors.
"His health condition has gradually deteriorated overnight and is not considered to be reversible", the bulletin said.
Mitsopoulos, aged 48, was found unconscious in his ministry office by his secretary on Friday morning, between etiquette meetings he had with foreign ambassadors.
He had moved to the defense ministry from the Ministry of Communications in a limited government reshuffle on March 14.
Doctors at the hospital where he underwent an emergency brain operation said the hemorrhage had been caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm -- a bulge in a blood vessel filled with blood.
Because of the seriousness of his condition, Cyprus' President Nicos Anastasiades cut short his stay in Brussels where he had gone for the EU summit meeting and returned by special flight to Nicosia on Friday night.
Mitsopoulos had been director of Anastasiades' office at the Democratic Rally party and subsequently served as party spokesman, before being elected twice in parliament and becoming a minister.
He was born in Athens and had served as a special advisor to the Greek foreign ministry before moving to Cyprus.
He is one of the most popular politicians in Cyprus even among opposition parties.
