Voting begins in Maldives parliamentary polls

English.news.cn   2014-03-22 11:06:29

MALE, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Voting commenced peacefully in the Maldives parliamentary elections here on Saturday morning, an official said.

There are a total of 302 candidates including 23 women vying for 85 constituencies.

Of these the capital Male holds the largest number of constituencies at 13, with 7 on Addu and the remaining 65 scattered around various atolls.

The elections are the biggest test faced by President Abdulla Yameen so far in his short five-month term and he will be looking to wrest parliament away from the control of the Maldivian Democratic Party led by former President Mohammad Nasheed.
