OSAKA, March 14 (Xinhua) -14 people were injured early Friday morning as a powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6. 2 jolted a wide area in western Japan, local press reported.
The quak,which occured at 2.07 a.m. local time, was registered at upper 5 on Japan's seismic intensity of 7 in parts of Ehime prefecture and was felt in several prefectures in the area. 14 people in Okayama, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Kochi and Oita prefectures sustained minor injuries in the quake.
The quake originated around 78 kilometers underground in Iyonada inland sea sandwiched by three of Japan's largest islands -- Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu.No tsunami warnings were issued after the quake. Shikoku Electric Power Co. said no abnormality was detected in measuring instrument data at its Ikata nuclear power plant in Ikata, Ehime Prefecture, where lower-5 was registered on the Japanese seismic scale of 7.
Meanwhile, Chugoku Electric Power Co. said its Shimane nuclear power plant in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, also reported no abnormality, according to the report.
