ISTANBUL, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Nationwide protests erupted in over 30 cities in Turkey on Tuesday after the death of a student who had been seriously injured during the protests in last June.
Fifteen-year-old Berkin Elvan died Tuesday after 269 days in coma since last June, when he was shot in the head by a police gas canister during the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul.
On Tuesday evening police used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon to disperse protesters gathering in the capital Ankara, Istanbul and other cities. They also refused the demand of protesters in Istanbul's Taksim Square to read a statement.
Earlier in the afternoon students in many schools and universities in Ankara, Istanbul, Eskisehir and Antalya boycotted lectures by staging protests and sit-ins. They will also boycott Wednesday's classes to attend Elvan's funeral in Istanbul.
On June 16, 2013, Elvan was going to buy bread when he was shot in the head by riot police in Okmeydan district of Istanbul. He had been in intensive care unit in hospital for nine months.
His death raised the toll during the Gezi Park protests to eight, including a police officer.
The Gezi Park protests broke out as a peaceful demonstration on May 30 last year against a redevelopment plan of Istanbul's Gezi Park. It then spread into a nationwide wave of demonstrations against the Turkey's central government.
