ISTANBUL, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Students in many schools and universities in Istanbul, Ankara, Eskisehir, Antalya and other cities in Turkey boycotted lectures on Tuesday after the death of 15-year-old student Berkin Elvan, who had been in coma for 9 months after being shot with a gas canister during the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul.
Students are staging protests and sit-in and they will also boycott their classes on Wednesday to attend the funeral of their slain colleague in Istanbul.
Protests will be held simultaneously in other 16 cities late afternoon. In Istanbul protests will be staged in seven different districts.
Police fired tear gas at the crowds waiting in front of Okmeydan Hospital where Elvan died, injuring one person to his head.
Civil society organizations and several platforms have been appealing to people to take to the streets at the same time in different cities in the afternoon.
Riot police have closed the Gezi Park as of the noon hours and took heavy security measures in the Taksim Square, deploying armored vehicles and water cannons.
Elvan was going to buy bread when he was shot in the head by riot police in Okmeydan district of Istanbul on June 16, 2013. He had been in intensive care unit in hospital for 269 days.
