Merkel, Obama say Russia violates international law

BERLIN, March 2 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed over the phone the situation in Ukraine with U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday.

Both agreed that Russia's intervention in Crimea is a violation of the international law, deputy spokesman for the German government, Georg Streiter, said.

They agreed to continue to coordinate closely with each other, saying now it depends especially on the unity of the international community in the face of the injustice, Streiter said in a statement.

Speaking of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, Merkel and Obama noted that only a political solution is suitable to solve the problems in the country.

Streiter has also said in a statement that Merkel on Sunday held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Merkel said in the phone call that Russia has violated the international law with the "unacceptable Russian intervention" in Crimea.

Putin accepted Merkel's proposal to immediately set up a "fact finding mission" and a contact group in order to start a political dialogue, the spokesman said.

Putin and Merkel agreed to continue consultations both in the bilateral format (through the two nations' foreign ministries) and multilaterally to promote the stabilization of the situation in Ukraine, the statement said.
