MOSCOW, March 1 (Xinhua) -- President Vladimir Putin has requested approval from the Federal Council, Russia's upper house of parliament, to use armed forces in Ukraine, the Kremlin website said Saturday.
It said he made the request "in connection with the extraordinary situation in Ukraine, the threat to the lives of citizens of the Russian Federation, our compatriots, and the personnel of the military contingent of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation deployed in the territory of Ukraine (Autonomous Republic of Crimea)."
The troops would be used until the "political-social situation in the country is normalized," the website said.
The request came hours after the State Duma, or lower house, asked Putin for measures to stabilize the situation in Crimea, a Ukrainian autonomous region that is the epicenter of the ongoing crisis in that country.
It was not immediately known whether Russia would use armed forces stationed in Crimea or dispatch new units.
