JERUSALEM, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian in the West Bank on Thursday. The military and police said the killed was plotting terror attacks.
The suspected militant barricaded himself in a house in the village of Bir Zeit, north of Ramallah, with two other men wanted for questioning. Operatives from the Israeli police Yamam counter- terrorism unit surrounded the structure and called on the suspects to turn themselves in.
"Two of the terrorists gave themselves up, and the third was killed in a gun battle with the forces," police said.
Before the operation the police received intelligence that the suspects had planned to carry out a terror attack in the immediate future.
A military spokeswoman said the forces tried to do the arrest peacefully. They fired warning shots, but the standoff lasted several hours. They fired into the structure after the militant ignored their calls to surrender.
"Forces who entered his residence found him dead, and uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle," police said.
The dead man's identity was not disclosed. He was reportedly affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and was suspected of plotting a string of attacks across the West Bank, military sources said.
The event sparked violent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in the area. Military troops reportedly dispersed rioters with no injuries on either side.
