CAIRO, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- A national security policeman was killed on Saturday evening by unknown gunmen in Egypt's Sharqiya governorate, north of the capital Cairo, the Egyptian interior ministry said in a statement.

"Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Eid Abdel-Salam has been targeted by two unknown assailants who opened fire at him while he was getting in his car, and ran away," the ministry's statement said, adding the attack took place in Zagazig city of Sharqiya.

The policeman died of injuries in hospital while the authorities are intensifying efforts to bust the perpetrators.

On Feb. 11 and 12, five policemen were similarly shot dead in separate attacks while they were on duty at the Suez Canal provinces of Ismailia and Port Said.
