UN Security Council condemns terrorist attacks in Lebanon

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned the deadly terrorist attacks in the Lebanese capital Beirut earlier in the day, calling the bombings "heinous acts."

In a press statement, the council "reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security," stressing the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.

An al-Qaida linked group, known as Abdullah Azzam Brigades, claimed that they carried out two suicide blasts targeting the Iranian Cultural Mission in Bir Hassan, a suburban neighborhood in the south of Beirut, killing at least six people and injuring 129 others. A new cabinet was announced in Lebanon on Saturday.

The 15-member council "commended the commitment of the new government to maintain security and stability in Lebanon," meanwhile urging the Lebanese people to preserve national unity and refrain from any involvement in the Syrian crisis.
