Mortar shells from Syria land in Golan Heights

English.news.cn   2014-02-19 02:15:57

JERUSALEM, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Two mortar shells fired from Syria landed in the part of Golan Heights occupied by Israel Tuesday afternoon, the Israeli military said.

The projectiles, which exploded in an open area in the Golan Heights near the "Syrian-Israeli interim border," caused no injuries or damage, said the army statement.

Israel's Army Radio said the shells had "likely been erroneously fired into Israel" as Syrian military forces fought rebels across the border.

Earlier on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon toured the Golan, a strategic plateau taken over by Israel in the 1967 war, and visited a field hospital set up by the Israeli military a year ago to treat Syrians wounded in their country's civil unrest.
