IAEA starts probe into possible military use of nuclear energy in Iran

English.news.cn   2014-02-10 20:02:04

VIENNA, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- The UN nuclear watchdog said Monday that it has started investigation to clarify long-standing concerns over possible military links to Iran's nuclear program.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has just taken the first step to investigate the "possible military dimension" of the nuclear program, chief UN nuclear inspector Tero Varjoranta told reporters at Vienna airport upon his return from Tehran.

Iran and the IAEA have agreed on seven practical measures to be implemented by Tehran by May 15 to promote the investigation of Iran's nuclear program, according to a joint statement made by both sides on Sunday.

Varjoranta, IAEA deputy director general and head of the safeguard department, said everything is going as planned according to the agreement reached last November.

But he emphasized there would still be a long way to go to resolve "a lot of outstanding issues" and it takes time to improve mutual trust between the two sides.

Iran was suspected of conducting nuclear weapon research under the cover of a nuclear program for civilian use. Tehran denies the claim.
