SARIPUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- A key Taliban commander was arrested in the northern Afghan province of Saripul on Monday, provincial police chief Noor Habib Gulbahari said.
"Acting on a tip-off, police raided a house in provincial capital Saripul city and captured Qari Sami in the wee hours of Monday," Gulbahari told Xinhua.
Qari Sami was the head of Taliban military operations in Saripul province, Gulbahari said, adding Sami's arrest is a major setback to the Taliban militants in Saripul and adjoining provinces.
Interior Ministry also confirmed the arrest of Qari Sami, adding Sami was involved in subversive activities and just two days ago he shot dead tribal elder Hajji Yasin in Kohistanat district of Saripul province.
Taliban militants have yet to make comment.
