SEOUL, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Air Force's nuclear-capable B- 52 bomber flied over western seas in South Korea on Wednesday, which the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) denounced as an obstacle to improve inter-Korean relations, Yonhap News Agency reported Thursday.
A South Korean military official was quoted by Yonhap as saying that one B-52 bomber of the U.S military made a sortie to the western seas on Wednesday for the training purpose.
The official said that it was part of the previously planned flight trainings, but he declined to comment on further details as it is the U.S. military's training schedule.
The DPRK slammed the nuclear-capable U.S. bomber's deployment on the Korean Peninsula Wednesday when the two Koreas held talks and agreed to family reunion, according to the National Defense Commission's statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.
Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to stage reunion of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War from Feb. 20 to Feb. 25 at the DPRK's scenic resort of Mount Kumgang. If it is to be held, it would be the first reunion in more than three years.
The DPRK's top military body urged South Korea to cancel its scheduled joint military exercises with the United States, saying that dialogue and the rehearsal for war of aggression can never be compatible.
Citing negative reports of some South Korean media on top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un's recent visit to childcare centers, the commission said that implementation of the agreement between the two Koreas, apparently pointing to the agreed reunion of separated families, can be reviewed if the South side's slandering of its supreme dignity continues.
Starting from late February, Seoul and Washington will conduct joint annual military exercises, which Pyongyang has denounced as the rehearsal for a northward invasion, till April. The beginning of the joint drills was expected to fall on the reunion date.
South Korean military has confirmed that it will carry out the Key Resolve and the Foal Eagle war games with the United States as scheduled, noting that the military drills were defensive in nature. The military had yet to unveil detailed schedules for the drills.
The B-52 bomber, which was deployed to the Korean Peninsula during last year's joint military exercises between Seoul and Washington, served as an American nuclear umbrella for South Korea as it can fly more than 6,400 km with air-to-land nuclear missiles loaded.
