MANILA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The number of people infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the Philippines went up by 44.2 percent on year to 4,814 in 2013, the Department of Health said on Tuesday.
The new cases brought to 16,516 the number of HIV cases recorded by the department since 1984.
In December 2013 alone, the department recorded 358 new HIV cases, 22 percent higher than the 293 cases recorded a year earlier.
The ages of those infected with HIV range from 17 to 28 years old, with 27 as the median age.
The department recorded 338 deaths from HIV infection in 2013. Since 1984, the government has recorded 887 deaths.
In 2012, the government recorded 3,338 cases, higher than the 2, 239 posted in 2011.
